Posts vs. Comments

My students have not fully begun blogging yet, although they comment regularly on my science class blog, as well as two other class blogs. As we complete setting up student blogs and as students begin blogging on the ISS07 site I want to help them make the transition from commenting to posting. I created this table to contrast the two. Am I on the right track here? Any feedback, additions, deletions, rewordings or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Comments Blog Posts
  • Posted on someone else’s site
  • Directly related to the Post the comment is for.
  • You are writing as a viewer
  • Usually shorter, one paragraph or less (not always)
  • Often has a compliment about the post
  • Good comments seek to add to the conversation-use questioning
  • Topic is decision of the author (class assignments not withstanding)
  • Post lives on authors site
  • You are writing as an author
  • Usually a planned thought out piece of writing
  • Usually longer, a full paragraph or more
  • Length gives the author time to and space to develop voice
  • Good blog posts seek to stimulate conversation
