Your illustration of how access to online data has allowed you to enhancewhat you do in the classroom is a good one.  Do the students see their individual data collections as part of a larger effort?  Do you have your students investigate different regions of the globe during different years and combine data across years?

Last year, I was playing around with embedding simulations in wikispaces.  This page might be useful for you for class discussions, etc.
