View Appreciation
Published December 18, 2007 by Rick Biche
I spent a good deal of time in middle school staring out the windows, often despite the redirections of my teachers to focus on my work. There wasn’t much to look at so if teachers said I wouldn’t learn anything staring outside they were probably right. My classroom now is different. If a kid wants to take a break and stare out these windows I am not put back immediately (if this continues too long there may be an issue).
Whats not to learn from this image, snow line, tree line, cloud patterns. Sometimes I will suggest that they check the weather conditions from the summit. The end result is always a conversation with a peer about the differences in weather between there and here. So if you want to stare out my windows. I don’t mind so much, but I will sneak in and cause learning, even when you are not expecting it.
